In partnership with more than a dozen educational institutions and nonprofits in three cities, Travelers EDGE (Empowering Dreams for Graduation and Employment) is an innovative program that helps increase the number of underrepresented individuals who complete a bachelor’s degree and are prepared for a career within the Insurance and Financial Services (IFS) industry. Given that the program targets students from middle school to college in a variety of ways in multiple cities, Travelers needed a measurement and evaluation solution that could capture its full impact.
We began our work with Travelers EDGE by setting up an outcomes framework that describes the changes Travelers EDGE seeks for its partners and the students they reach. The result was the Travelers EDGE pipeline—a model showing how each Travelers EDGE partner contributes to the outcomes in the Travelers EDGE framework, thereby supporting youth from middle school through to college graduation. Using the pipeline model, Travelers EDGE knows how the students being reached by its programs are progressing towards the ultimate goal of graduating college ready to join the insurance and financial services industry.
Travelers uses the pipeline to track students to varying degrees at each step of the Travelers EDGE program: Gaining awareness of college and career opportunities, becoming prepared for higher education, thriving in college and ultimately graduating prepared for a career in the IFS industry.
During the 2010-2011 school year, 7,895 students were reached through elements of the pipeline, including 90 Travelers EDGE Scholars, college/university students who received significant financial, academic and career support.
In 2011, 22 Travelers EDGE scholars graduated with a Bachelor’s degree—12 of them now work in the IFS industry, including six at Travelers.
On a scale of 0-10, with zero meaning “Travelers EDGE has not significantly contributed to my education” and 10 meaning “I would not be where I am today without Travelers EDGE”, the mean score for Travelers EDGE Scholars was 8.2.
